From Embedded to Empowered: The Rise of Software-Defined Products
In automotive, it’s called a “software-defined vehicle.” But the move toward software-defined products is also happening in aerospace, industrial systems, medical devices, and other industries. Until now, most customer-visible capabilities in products have been implemented as mechanical and electronic subsystems, with certain critical operational functions implemented using embedded software. As a result, much of the functionality has been set at production. Going forward, the features that represent brand-distinctive attributes and customer-perceived value will be defined through software, providing the ability to generate new value throughout the lifespan of the system. This transformation to “software-defined” requires changes in development processes, new synergies between teams, and new ways to leverage platforms like MATLAB® and Simulink®. In this talk, discover key approaches to capturing the value while mitigating the risks associated with the disruptive changes.
María Elena Gavilán Alfonso
MathWorks
María Elena Gavilán Alfonso is a technical program manager at MathWorks, leading worldwide initiatives to expand the adoption of MATLAB and Simulink in academic and research institutions. Her work emphasizes real-world applications across many engineering domains, with a particular emphasis on engineered systems that incorporate AI and physical modeling. She is passionate about advancing autonomous vehicles and climate technology. Prior to MathWorks, María specialized in computational fluid dynamics with Lattice Boltzmann, with applications in the automotive and aerospace sectors. Her experience includes projects in aerodynamics, aeroacoustics, and thermal management. Additionally, her expertise in previous appointments includes computer vision and controls, where she worked in software development with embedded systems. Maria holds a B.Sc. in physics from the National University of Colombia, an M.Sc. in aeronautics and astronautics from Purdue University, and an M.B.A. from UIUC.
The Empathetic Engineers of Tomorrow
Today’s students are digital natives who want to make an immediate difference, but they are also coming of age with questions about the stability and worth of higher education. Yet in this era of rapid technological change, we need to keep increasing and developing our engineering talent to make sure we can address the grand challenges of our time.
That’s why we need to create the “empathetic engineer”: people with strong interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity who consider the ethical implications of their work while focusing on sustainability and social responsibility.
In this talk, University of Maryland President Darryll J. Pines will discuss how cutting-edge research, experiential learning opportunities, and grassroots education initiatives—including MATLAB® tools and research—are developing a new cohort of empathetic engineers and already making real change for real people.
Darryll J. Pines is the 34th president of the University of Maryland and Glenn L. Martin Professor of Aerospace Engineering. He was previously assistant professor and chair of the Department of Aerospace Engineering, and dean and Nariman Farvardin Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the A. James Clark School of Engineering. His presidential priorities include the Grand Challenges Grants program to solve pressing societal issues; the 120 Initiative to address gun violence; the Terrapin Commitment to increase college affordability; and the TerrapinSTRONG program to strengthen campus belonging. Pines received a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Institute of Physics.
A Model-Based Design Journey from Aerospace to an Artificial Pancreas System
Throughout the history of medicine, the sole method of therapy development has been arduous, trial-and-error iterations of clinical studies. With the advent of medical device technologies in the late 20th century, engineering principles were introduced that over time led to new ways of thinking about system development for medical applications. In parallel, model-based development tools and methodologies began taking root in aerospace applications, particularly in the area of flight control system development. By the early 2000s, the time was ripe for aerospace system development techniques to cross over into medical technology.
In this talk, hear about a cross-disciplinary journey of Model-Based Design from aerospace to medical technology, leading to Medtronic’s development of an artificial pancreas system that provides automated insulin therapy for people living with type 1 diabetes. Now, armed with this methodology and the MATLAB® and Simulink® products that enable it, Medtronic is able to design, validate, and launch new artificial pancreas technologies at a speed that was previously unimaginable—leading to diabetes therapy that is commonly described as life-changing.
Lou Lintereur is the chief engineer of Automated Insulin Delivery Systems and a technical fellow at Medtronic Diabetes. He is the engineering leader for the 670G, 780G, and future closed-loop programs and has general responsibility for the engineering and product development strategy of Medtronic’s closed-loop insulin delivery technology.
Lou joined Medtronic in 2011 as a member of the systems engineering team responsible for closed-loop algorithm development. Prior to Medtronic, he held research and development positions at Advanced Bionics, Hughes Space and Communications, and NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center.
Lou holds a B.S. in aerospace engineering from Purdue University and an M.S. in aerospace engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with an emphasis in systems and control theory.
